Head Gardener
The Packington Estate
Warwickshire / Midlands
A very exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified and skilled Head Gardener to join us at this exciting time for the gardens continued improvement and development.
A hands-on role to manage and work with a small team of around 4 gardeners. The garden is private but has opened under the National Gardens Scheme; more frequent openings for the walled garden are possible.
The gardens and parkland were originally designed by Capability Brown, are mainly located within 27 acres of ‘Pleasure Grounds’ and include herbaceous borders, a rose garden, a beautifully reimagined walled garden with both garden and productive areas, additional productive areas and polytunnel, wild-flower meadows and lakes, set within the wider parkland and areas of nature restoration.
The Estate is currently undergoing an evolution working towards sustainable methodologies that are aligned with its core pillars of stewardship, sustainability, connectivity and wellness. Although not currently certified, the garden is run along organic and no-dig principals. The ambition is to improve soil health and create a sustainable environment, allowing nature to thrive.
The owner has a background in garden design and deep passion for gardening.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable candidate who can collaborate and work closely with the owner in further improving the garden and who has a number of large and exciting projects in the pipeline.
A major focus for the garden is in growing high quality, highly nutritious food, while also making space for wildlife to flourish and this ethos is carried through into the gardens. This role gives the individual an exciting opportunity to become a vital part of a wide, established team in working towards this goal.
This position would suit an experienced gardener with excellent attention to detail and experience of supervising a team and volunteers. Proven management skills with the ability to inspire, be a positive team player and having excellent communication skills. Additionally, a solid understanding of health and safety practices is required. Candidates must have excellent plant knowledge and experience in all gardening practices, and a level 3 horticultural qualification, or equivalent.
We are looking for a good leader, one who can inspire and support our values. This role is a wonderful opportunity to work within a progressive vibrant, historic estate, within a close-knit team, and with owners who have enormous passion for their gardens and are always looking to create change and progress. The Head Gardener will report directly to the owners.
