Head Gardener.
Private Estate, Cranborne Chase, Dorset.
The owners acquired this 1,300-acre estate around three years ago and have subsequently undertaken a significant programme of improvement to the house, garden and estate generally..
The 2-acre walled garden has productive beds cultivated on the no dig principle, and is like the rest of the garden, managed with nature-based solutions where practical. There is an ornamental orchard to the south of the walled garden, and a newly planted shrub field to the north which will be used to supply the horticultural trade once the plants are more mature.
The walled garden has a large newly built greenhouse as well as cold frames, and outside it there is a large polytunnel for the raising of vegetable, herb and flowers from seed as well as cuttings for the garden. Outside, there are lawns and meadows, as well as beds around the house and herbaceous borders which will need to be planned and planted once the building works are closer to completion. Hedge and tree planting is also ongoing and will need maintaining, including woodland planting.
The Head Gardener role is very much a hands-on role. They will work closely with the owners to create a beautiful and productive garden and will continue the work that is already underway.
They should have experience of working in a responsible position on a private estate and possess the skills and qualifications required to take on such a responsibility.
The Head Gardener will initially be responsible for 2 staff, although it is likely that additional support could be available from the wider estate or contractors when required.
Salary in the region of £45K plus bonus and annual review.
Accommodation on the estate is available if required.
