Senior Gardener
Private Estate, West Berks
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Estate Gardener looking for a challenge to work on a small private estate in West Berks with landscaped grounds dating back to 1800s. The owners are keen to further develop the grounds which includes an arboretum, walled gardens, ancient hedges, substantial areas laid to lawn and paddock and woodland. The job will appeal to an estate-experienced gardener who wants ownership of the upkeep of the established grounds and will be able to actively contribute to new projects.
The ideal candidate will:
Have proven knowledge and hands-on experience of horticulture, arboriculture and woodland management gained from previous roles and ready to step up to a senior role supervising a small part-time team.
Enjoy a varied role from complex mowing to a flair for planting of borders and pots, tending of shrubberies and roses, planting and caring for specimen trees and overseeing more extensive tree work when necessary.
Be a resourceful, friendly character with good communication skills and the flexibility to juggle the range of different tasks while also responding to the challenges of the weather.
Enjoy planning and exchanging ideas with the owners and have discretion and understanding of confidentiality required when working on a private estate.
Have a full driving licence and hands-on experience with using a variety of machinery, including Kubota tractor and ride-ons, chainsaws etc and knowledge of ongoing maintenance and servicing requirements.
Relevant horticultural qualifications and machinery certificates preferred.
You will need to be self-employed, physically fit and enthusiastic to take on a demanding role and have your own transport.
The role is 32 hours a week on a flexible or structured basis - the 32 hours can be taken over 4 or 5 days to suit the candidate.
Earnings dependent on experience with a range of £25 - £30 per hour, which on a 32-hour week equates to an annual gross of £42,000 to £50,000.
